It started like any other evening. Everything seemed normal until we walked into the bathroom and noticed something unusual on the floor.
At first glance, it looked like a tiny alien creature—green, soft, curled up, and unlike anything we’d ever seen before. My first reaction was to step back in surprise.
My husband carefully picked it up with a tissue, and we’ve been staring at it ever since, trying to figure out what it could possibly be.

So, What Is It?
The mysterious object is most likely a cicada nymph that has just molted (shed its exoskeleton).
Cicadas spend 2 to 17 years underground, depending on the species, feeding on tree roots. When it’s time to become adults, they climb out of the soil, attach themselves to a wall, tree, or other surface, and shed their outer skin.
During this transformation, the newly emerged cicada is often soft, pale, and sometimes greenish, making it look very strange before its wings expand and its body hardens.
Why Was It in the Bathroom?
Although it’s uncommon, there are several possible explanations:
- It may have accidentally entered through an open window or door.
- It could have crawled inside while searching for a place to complete its transformation.
- Bright lights at night often attract insects, including cicadas.
Bathrooms also provide cool, humid conditions that some insects temporarily seek.
Is It Dangerous?
The good news is no.
Cicadas:
- Do not bite people.
- Do not sting.
- Are not poisonous.
- Do not spread diseases to humans.
They’re completely harmless and play an important role in nature.
What Should You Do?
If you find one:
- Gently place it outside on a tree, bush, or other safe surface.
- Avoid squeezing or injuring it if it’s still alive.
- Let nature take its course—it will soon complete its transformation into an adult cicada.
Why Do So Many People Think It’s Something Scary?
Because freshly molted cicadas look dramatically different from the familiar flying insects we usually see. Their soft bodies, unusual color, and curled appearance often make people mistake them for parasites, alien creatures, or dangerous bugs.
In reality, they’re simply going through one of nature’s most incredible transformations.
